MALAYSIA EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER AUKUS DEAL 2021: Malaysia has raised concerns that the security partnership between Australia, Britain and the United States known as AUKUS could potentially lead to a nuclear arms race in the Indo-Pacific region.

That position was voiced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yakub, who is familiar with the matter, in the Prime Minister’s (PMO) statement today.

At the same time, he fears the move will provoke other powers to act aggressively in the region, particularly in the South China Sea.

“As an ASEAN member state, Malaysia adheres to the principle of safeguarding ASEAN as a zone of peace, freedom and neutrality (ZOPFAN),” the statement said.

The PMO said Ismail Sabri received a call yesterday from Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison informing Malaysia of the deal with AUKUS and saying he should help Australia acquire nuclear submarines. E. Barnam
